The Canada Day Duck Race
Each year on Canada Day, the Steven Young Trust Fund descends on the banks of Caledonia's Grand River. There, canoes unleash 1000 bright yellow rubber ducks into the river on a high-stakes race toward the finish line at the iconic Caledonia bridge!
As they make their way down the river, dodging twigs, and taking on the strong and unruly currents, these ducks try to out-swim their competitors to find themselves in the top 4 finishers! Cheering them on - Caledonia residents (most of them proud duck-ticket buyers!) cross their fingers and hope that the duck bearing their lucky number will come in first!
At the end of the track, in their equally bright-coloured t-shirts the Steven Young Trust Fund Volunteers await the ducks along a safety fence constructed solely for them that stretches half-way across the river!
Here - volunteers carefully watch over the ducks, and with great care collect the four winning ducks and take them to the shore, while their ducky comrades are moved back into the canoes safely and efficiently. In 34 years of racing, with even the fasting moving river - we've NEVER lost a duck!
The esteemed winners are then taken to the winner's circle and their sponsor's names are announced! After the race, each winner is personally contacted and awarded their prize of up to $500!
Ticket sales begin each year a few weeks before Canada day!
If there are any tickets remaining on race day - you'll find Steven Young Trust Fund volunteers along the Canada Day Parade Route, and at the Dam in the park until just before the race at 3:30pm!
